Katy Davenport, Educational Clinic Director at the Clinic for Autism Research, Evaluation and Support (CARES) at Texas State University will speak on these topics. Ms. Davenport has over 13 years of experience working with children with a range of developmental and intellectual disabilities in public schools, as a private in home behavior therapist (Board Certified Behavior Analyst), and as a consultant to school districts.
CARES has developed an assessment to identify goals and skills that need to be taught for a child to be independent and safe in everyday situations. It covers safety at home, in the community, with peers, and on the Internet. See link for more information and registration. A guest speaker, Alison Baucom, Behavior Analyst, shared the following with our parents last fall:
Navigating the world of special education, therapies, and medical providers is exhausting--- we call this the special care industry. I've shared an application with you today called Connections with the intent to support you in navigating the special care industry. Lamarque Polvado began working to create the Connections application after receiving a diagnosis of autism for his daughter and walking out of the doctor's office with nothing more than a Center for Disease Control printout on autism. He created the Connections application to provide caregivers with free information about where they can access the services they need for their children and family. The Connections application can be used on your phone, tablet, or on the web. It provides a comprehensive (and growing) list of local resources pertaining to caring for an individual with a special need. The main categories of resources include: Education, Medical, Nutrition, Family, Recreation, and Therapy. Within each category are a number of subcategories organizing specific local resources from financial support to pediatricians to special education lawyers and more. The Connections application is new and continuing to improve. Some of the unique features include matching users with providers that accept their insurance and the ability to create multiple profiles on one account (so each of your children's medical team and providers can be organized in one place). Future updates will include a Care Map suggesting untapped resources to better support individuals based upon their diagnoses. Sharing the application is easy--- login, click Share the App, and enter a phone number or email. Please feel free to call, email. or text with any questions. While I'm not an expert in the application, I've actively been using it and would be happy to support you. If you have filled out the permission form allowing me to contact you, and turned it into your child's teacher or me, thank you! If not, please do so! In addition to the permission to contact signature, there is also an area to circle what areas pertaining to Special Education are most important to you. This questionnaire about what topics interest you will allow the Campus Parent Ambassador Program to best meet your needs. Thank you for taking the time! The parents who attended the Meet and Greet last week had an opportunity to talk with our fantastic SpEd staff and principal, and get an overview of SpEd system at Baldwin. Below you will find the slide show that outlines our educators and their roles. Parents, you should've received information about our upcoming Special Education Meet and Greet in your child's Wednesday folder: one page detailing the Campus Parent Ambassador Position, along with the date, time, and location for the meeting; and also, a second page with a questionnaire and a signature line allowing me to contact you with upcoming SpEd information. Click on and print the two files here if you need another copy, or didn't receive them last week. You may bring them with you to the Meet and Greet on Wednesday at 5:30 or turn them back into your child's teacher. See you soon!
Welcome to the brand new special education parent website at Baldwin! The site is still a work in progress, but will be THE best place to learn more about opportunities, events, school and city information, and other news that you may find helpful as a parent of a child receiving SpEd services. Sign up on this site to receive updates when they are posted so that you can always be in the know! Hope you're enjoying this beautiful fall weather, and Mrs. Murray and I will see you at the SpEd Meet and Greet on November 9th. Please look for more information in your child's Wednesday folder:
